All You Need To Know About Uyuni National Park

Every traveler visiting Bolivia should make a mandatory stop at the Uyuni National Park, which is positioned as the number one tourist destination in the high Andean country. Within the Uyuni National Park, you will find the Uyuni Salt Mines, the tallest mountain range in Bolivia, with representative volcanoes such as the Tunupa volcano and the wonderful Lagunas Coloradas de Uyuni.

Uyuni National Park is located about 3650 meters above sea level in southwestern Bolivia, in the province of Daniel Campos, in the department of Potosi, in the Altiplano region of the Andes, and can be accessed from La Paz by plane (approximately 1 hour and fifteen minutes), bus trip (about 10 hours with only night departures) and train from Oruro with an approximate duration of seven hours and this is the most economical way, but it does not have daily departures.

The main tourist attraction in the Uyuni National Park is the Uyuni Salt Mine, which is the highest and most extensive salt mine in the world, with an area of almost 11,000 square kilometers of white salt. From the city of Uyuni, you can reach the beginning of the Uyuni Salt Mines in 30 minutes, but we recommend a stop at the Uyuni Train Cemetery, which is located just outside the city.

Although the Uyuni Salt Mine is the main attraction, within the Uyuni National Park, you will find other attractions such as the Incahuasi Island, located in the middle of the Uyuni Salt Mine; the Laguna Colorada, known for its color changes depending on the time of day and position of the sun; the chain of volcanoes with the Tunupa Volcano as the principal exponent; and the Salt Palace/Museum, which was previously a salt hotel that housed travelers who spent more than a day in the Uyuni National Park.

The best time to visit Uyuni National Park is during January, February, and March, which is the rainy season. It may sound strange that the rainy season is the most appropriate, but this is because, in these months, you can appreciate the mirror effect in the Salt Mine of Uyuni. If you visit Uyuni this season, we recommend you bring waterproof clothes and a change of clothes if you take a travel package longer than two days in the Uyuni National Park.

Despite the altitude of the Uyuni National Park, here you will also find animals such as vicuñas, foxes, and flamingos that are the main attraction on the shores of the Lagunas Colorada and Laguna Verde.

The more days you spend in Uyuni National Park, the more tourist attractions you can visit in the different parts of the park. You can travel to Chile through the Atacama Desert or return to La Paz to continue your trip through Bolivia or Peru. We recommend you not arrive directly at Uyuni National Park from your country because some attractions are more than 5000 meters above sea level, such as the geysers of Sol de Mañana. Ask our travel specialists for the travel program in Uyuni National Park that best suits your flight itinerary and physical condition.
