Valparaiso, the artistic city in Chile

Valparaiso is a city, the capital of the region of the same name, located northeast of Santiago de Chile and borders the regions of Coquimbo, Metropolitana, and O'Higgins. It is considered by all travelers who visit the country of poets as a tourist attraction, which is an obligatory stop on their travel itinerary.

You can get to Valparaiso from Santiago de Chile (the city that has the closest international airport to Valparaiso) by taking a bus with a cost between five and twelve dollars (travel time of 2 hours and a half) per person or by cab (travel time of 1 hour and 40 minutes), but the cost rises above 100 dollars. Since Valparaiso has no airport, it is impossible to get there by air.

Valparaiso is a port city on the coast of Chile characterized by its ambiance, mixing the artistic, bohemian, gastronomic, and modern parts of the Chilean territory. When you arrive at the port, you will be able to find parked large and small boats or others that you can access to take a boat ride around the port of Valparaiso. In its surroundings, you will also find the Chilean naval base and the naval museum, the most popular places for visitors, and numerous local and international restaurants.

Another fundamental characteristic of Valparaiso is its steep streets formed in the city's hills. The neighborhoods that are located in the hills of the city have become popular due to the use of lifts to transport people through the various points of the hills. You can also appreciate artistic expressions in all the streets of the hills of Valparaiso in paintings, murals, artistic exhibitions in cultural houses, open-air concerts, and even pamphlets that the artists hand out in the streets.

As mentioned in the blog's title, art is a word directly associated with Valparaiso, as it is the birthplace of famous Chilean characters such as Gabriel Parra or Salvador Allende. This artistic city is the meeting point for students, foreigners, painters, and poets who find a point of inspiration in this environment that cannot be located anywhere else in Chile.

All around the city, you will find various museums, libraries, and art exhibits in open-air fairs or the old mansions of the city center. It is also worth mentioning that Valparaiso is one of the first cities in Chile where social movements started in the 50s and onwards, so on some occasions, you will be able to observe social demonstrations in the center of the city or in the outskirts where the Judiciary of the region is located.

Besides Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, another popular attraction in the bohemian city of Valparaiso is the Plaza Sotomayor in the center of the town (near the port). It is a meeting point for tourists who want to eat local food in the nearby restaurants or walk to the lifts in the city's lower part.

Please take advantage of the above attractions and ask our travel specialists to add the artistic city of Valparaiso to your travel program.
