Overview

Colombia is one of the most paradisiacal and dream destinations for every traveler visiting South America. GOTOLATAM has created this compact travel program so you can visit Colombia and its main tourist destinations like Bogota, Medellin, and Cartagena in 8 days.

Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to bogota, colombia

Enjoy your arrival to this paradisiacal South American destination with Gotolatam! Upon arrival at the El Dorado International Airport, our staff will assist you and transfer you to your hotel in Bogota. During the journey, which can sometimes be long due to the city traffic, we will brief you about your travel program and give you tips and recommendations to make your stay the best.

Day 2: Half-day bogota walking tour

Get ready for this half-day walking tour in the beautiful city of Bogota! First, you will climb Cerro de Monserrate. This Andean peak towers over Bogota, its slopes beginning at the edge of the La Candelaria district and ascending to 3152 m.a.s.l. At the top of the hill is the Sanctuary of Saint Christ Fallen, a significant pilgrimage destination due to the various miracles attributed to its altar statue. The spot has been associated with Christian worship since the 1620s. However, it was not until the 1650s that the first sanctuary was built, initially in the name of Monserrat’s Morena Virgin (near Barcelona), thus endowing the hill with its name. Today, you can climb along the one-hour walking path up to the peak, ride the funicular Monserrate train, or take the seven-minute cable car straight to the top. When you reach the summit, enjoy the panoramic views across the green Bogota Sabana, Downtown, and South Bogota below.

Get ready for this half-day walking tour in the beautiful city of Bogota! The next stop is the Historic Center of Bogota! Starting at the cobbled epicenter of La Candelaria, a blur of multi-colored colonial buildings housing trendy cafes and bars with live music pouring out onto the streets, where you get an insight into the beautiful Colombian culture.

After visiting the city's historic center, explore the central Bolivar Square, ringed with four of Bogotá's architectural highlights: the City Hall, the Houses of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the venerable Catedral Primada. When the tour finishes, we will take you back to your hotel in Bogota.

Day 3: Half-day tour to zipaquira and flight to medellin from bogota

We will start the day with the transfer to Zipaquira town, which is one hour from Bogotá. Visit the famous Salt Cathedral in Zipaquira, built almost 180 meters underground in a salt mine that was first exploited during pre-Columbian times. It is an important religious monument for Catholics, with many salt and marble sculptures. It is also considered the first of the seven wonders of Colombia! We will be back in Bogota in the afternoon and go to El Dorado International Airport to board a flight to Medellin. Once you arrive at Medellin Airport, our Gotolatam staff will take you to your hotel for the night.

Day 4: Half-day tour to medellin and culinary walking tour

On this day, you will explore the city during an exciting tour through the history and present of Medellin and learn more about the transformation of this fascinating metropolis.

Twenty years ago, Medellin was one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Back in the early 90s, when the hunt for Pablo Escobar took place, the head of Medellin’s drug cartel was at its peak. Until the turn of the millennium, the struggle about Escobar’s successor continued, but since 2002, Medellín has begun to change. Local politicians started to invest heavily in infrastructure and public education. Today, the “City of Eternal Spring” is one of the most innovative metropolises in the world.

In the afternoon, you will explore the hustle and bustle of the city center of Medellin on a unique culinary walking tour and try the most emblematic street food of the region and Colombia. Try delicious “Empanadas” and “Buñuelos” or “Arepa” filled with homemade cottage cheese and taste the sweetness of Colombian desserts. There are plenty of traditional options—some are fried, some are sweet, some are healthy—Medellin is a culinary paradise. Stroll through a small local market area and enjoy mouth-watering exotic fruits and fresh juice. This tour deeply explores Colombia’s culinary heart and provides an unforgettable culinary experience.

Day 5: Full-day tour of the guatape mountain

Today, you will have the chance to explore Medellin's rural surroundings. Enjoy incredible views of the undulating hills and greenery on your way towards the Peñol of Guatape, one of the most spectacular destinations in the surrounding area of Medellín. The 200-meter-high monolith can be climbed by a staircase of 740 steps. Enjoy breathtaking views over the stunning green mountains and blue lakes. From there, continue to the village of Guatape. The settlement is famous for its church and the beautiful, colorful paintings that decorate the houses. Once your tour finishes, we will take you back to your hotel in Medellin.

Day 6: Flight to cartagena from medellin and cartagena half-day tour

Very early in the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel and taken to Medellin Airport to board your flight to Cartagena. Our Gotolatam staff will welcome and escort you to your hotel upon arrival.

In the afternoon, you will visit Cartagena, Colombia’s walled city. Within its fortifications, you will find a unique culture and history that blend reality and fantasy. Stroll the cobblestone streets and admire the colonial buildings. Visit the city’s plazas, galleries, churches, and vaulted walkways where crafts and antiquities are sold. Later, you will visit the San Felipe Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most significant fortification ever built by the Spanish in any of their colonies. Climb along its defenses and explore its many batteries, parapets, and cannons. Once you reach the top, enjoy the vast views across the city and coastline, and imagine the importance of this strategic position in times of siege. Finally, there is a dense system of tunnels below the fort, connecting essential parts for distributing provisions around the siege. Some of these tunnels are lit and open to visitors, making for an eerie, atmospheric walk. Make sure to venture through these before you leave. The next stop is to ascend the Cerro de la Popa to look around the lovely stone convent at its peak and the stunning city views from this 150-meter-high vantage point before returning to your hotel in Cartagena to spend the night.

Day 7: Rosario island half-day tour

After breakfast, we will pick you up and transfer to the harbor, from where you will take a shared boat transfer to Rosario Island, a charming coral archipelago located only 60 minutes by speedboat. Upon your arrival, you can enjoy and explore this beautiful place of the National Natural Park.

Several optional nautical activities (kayaking, snorkeling, and other water activities) are available for an extra fee upon request.

You will return to Cartagena around 16h00 and have the rest of the afternoon free to rest or explore Cartagena by yourself before returning to your hotel.

Day 8: Departure from cartagena

We will escort you to Cartagena Airport to take your flight back home.
